Grok 4.1 remains a top-tier general-purpose model. It excels at complex reasoning, coding, and long-form analysis, and supports DeepSearch and multi-agent capabilities. Available on SuperGrok and Heavy plans.

Grok 4 was the previous flagship, still available and very capable. It introduced significant improvements in reasoning and multimodal understanding over Grok 3. Output pricing reaches $15.00 per million tokens at the high end.

Grok 3 remains available as a faster, lighter option. It handles everyday tasks well and responds quickly. Available on the free tier with X Premium.

API pricing ranges from $0.20/M tokens (fast models like grok-code-fast-1) up to $15.00/M tokens (grok-4 output), giving developers significant flexibility to match cost to task complexity.

Think Mode and Big Brain Mode:

Grok offers two enhanced reasoning modes:

• Think Mode: Grok reasons step by step before answering, similar to chain-of-thought. It takes longer but produces more thorough, accurate responses for complex questions. Available across most plans.

• Big Brain Mode: The most intensive reasoning mode, available on Heavy plans. Grok dedicates maximum computational resources to the problem, producing the deepest analysis possible. Best for complex math, science, coding challenges, and multi-step reasoning.

For most tasks, standard mode is sufficient. Think mode is worth enabling for anything analytical. Big Brain mode is for the hardest problems where you need the absolute best reasoning.

This includes conversational AI, basic image generation, and limited usage of Grok's capabilities. For casual users who are already X subscribers, this is sufficient for exploring what Grok can do.

Free on grok.com: xAI has also made Grok available for free on grok.com with limited usage. You can test the tool without any subscription.

SuperGrok ($30/month or $300/year): The professional tier. Includes:

Leverage real-time data. Grok's access to live X data is its biggest differentiator. Frame prompts that take advantage of this: "What are people saying about [competitor product] on X this week? Summarize the positive and negative sentiment." This produces insights no other AI tool can match.

Ask for direct answers. Grok's personality tends toward directness. Instead of getting hedged responses full of "it depends" and "there are many factors to consider," Grok is more likely to give you a clear position. If that is what you want, lean into it: "Give me a direct answer, no hedging: should a startup invest in X ads or LinkedIn ads for B2B SaaS?"

Use for trend analysis. "What are the emerging trends in [your industry] based on what people are discussing on X?" Grok synthesizes thousands of conversations into trend insights.

Creative brainstorming. Grok's less filtered personality makes it useful for brainstorming where you want bold, unconventional ideas rather than safe suggestions. "Give me 10 viral marketing ideas for a fintech app. Be creative and edgy, not corporate."

News and events. For breaking news and current events, Grok often has information faster than other AI tools because it monitors X in real time. "What happened with [event] in the last hour?" is a prompt that Grok handles better than competitors.

Tone configuration. If Grok's default personality is too edgy for your use case, you can adjust it in your prompt: "Respond in a professional, measured tone" overrides the default personality for that conversation.
