Claude is built by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI researchers who left specifically to build AI with a stronger emphasis on safety and reliability. That founding philosophy shapes the product in ways you will notice immediately when using it.

The first thing most people notice about Claude is the quality of its writing. Where other AI tools tend to produce generic, slightly robotic text, Claude's outputs read more naturally. The prose has better rhythm, more varied sentence structure, and a more human quality. This is not just perception: in blind tests, Claude's long-form writing is consistently rated as more natural and engaging than competing models.

The second distinguishing feature is Claude's ability to follow complex, multi-part instructions reliably. If you give Claude a detailed brief with ten specific requirements, it will typically address all ten. Other models often drop requirements or partially address them. This reliability makes Claude particularly valuable for professional work where consistency matters.

The third difference is context window size. Claude supports extremely long context windows (up to 200K tokens on Pro, equivalent to roughly 500 pages of text). This means you can upload entire documents, codebases, or research papers and have a conversation about all of it at once. No chunking, no summarizing, no worrying about what the model "forgot" from earlier in the conversation.

Claude's approach to safety also affects the user experience. Claude is more likely to push back on requests it considers potentially harmful, but it does so thoughtfully rather than with blanket refusals. It explains its reasoning and often suggests alternative approaches.

Anthropic offers three model tiers, and understanding when to use each one is one of the most practical skills for getting value from Claude.

Claude Opus is the most capable model in the family. It excels at complex analysis, nuanced writing, advanced reasoning, and tasks that require deep understanding. Opus is the model to use when quality is the priority: writing that needs to be publication-ready, analysis that needs to be thorough, coding that needs to be architecturally sound. The tradeoff is speed and cost (via API). Opus takes longer to respond and uses more tokens.

Claude Sonnet is the balanced model, and for many users it is the right default. It is significantly faster than Opus, produces high-quality output for the vast majority of tasks, and is more cost-effective via the API. Sonnet handles everyday work tasks, drafting, summarizing, coding, research, brainstorming, and general assistance with speed and quality that makes it the workhorse of the lineup.

Claude Haiku is the speed model. It responds almost instantly and is the most affordable via the API. Haiku is best for simple tasks that do not require deep reasoning: classification, extraction, simple Q&A, formatting, and high-volume processing. If you are building an application that needs to process thousands of requests quickly, Haiku is often the right choice.

Practical model selection:

• Writing a board presentation? Use Opus for the best quality.

• Drafting daily emails and summarizing documents? Sonnet handles this perfectly.

• Categorizing 500 support tickets? Haiku does it in seconds at minimal cost.

• Not sure? Start with Sonnet. Switch to Opus if the output needs more depth.

Claude's pricing is straightforward and the free tier is genuinely useful, not just a demo.

Free tier gives you access to Claude Sonnet with daily message limits. You get file uploads (PDFs, images, code files), web search, conversation history, and the core Claude experience. The limits are generous enough for casual exploration and occasional professional use. If you are evaluating whether Claude is right for you, the free tier gives you enough to make an informed decision.

Claude Pro ($20/month) removes most usage limits, gives you access to Opus (the most capable model), extended thinking mode (where Claude shows its reasoning process), higher file upload limits, priority access during peak times, and early access to new features. Pro also unlocks Projects, which let you organize conversations with persistent context.

For professionals, the Pro tier is where Claude becomes genuinely transformative. The combination of Opus quality, extended thinking for complex problems, and Projects for organized workflows creates an experience that is meaningfully different from the free tier.

Claude Team ($25/user/month) adds workspace collaboration, admin controls, higher usage limits, and a guarantee that your data is not used for training. Team makes sense for organizations deploying Claude across multiple users.

Claude Enterprise (custom pricing) adds SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, and custom data retention policies. This is for large organizations with compliance requirements.

The practical recommendation: start free, upgrade to Pro within the first week if you use Claude for work. The Opus model access alone justifies the cost for most professionals.

Claude.ai's interface is clean and focused, but several features are easy to miss.

The sidebar organizes your conversations chronologically. You can star important conversations for quick access, search through history, and delete conversations you no longer need. Get in the habit of giving conversations descriptive first messages: "Draft Q3 marketing report for SaaS product" is findable later; "help me write something" is not.

The model picker at the top of the chat lets you choose between models. On Pro, you will see Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. The small text below indicates the current model's capabilities.

File uploads (the attachment icon) support PDFs, images, spreadsheets, code files, and more. Claude can analyze entire documents in one conversation thanks to its large context window. You can upload multiple files at once for comparison or cross-reference tasks.

Web search is available by toggling the search icon. When enabled, Claude can search the web for current information before responding. This is useful for questions about recent events, current pricing, or up-to-date documentation.

Extended Thinking (available on Pro) shows Claude's reasoning process. When you enable this, Claude thinks through the problem step by step before giving its final answer. This is particularly powerful for complex analysis, math, coding challenges, and any task where seeing the reasoning is as valuable as the answer itself.

Artifacts appear in a side panel when Claude generates substantial outputs: documents, code files, diagrams, or structured data. Artifacts can be copied, downloaded, or iterated on independently from the main conversation.

Claude responds well to the same prompting fundamentals covered in any AI course: be specific, provide context, specify format, and iterate. But Claude has particular strengths that you can leverage with specific techniques.

Claude excels at following detailed instructions. Where other models might drop a requirement from a long brief, Claude reliably addresses every point. This means you can be more ambitious with your prompts. Instead of keeping instructions short to avoid confusion, give Claude the full context: all the requirements, all the constraints, all the preferences. It handles complexity well.

Claude responds well to natural language. You do not need to use special formatting or tricks. Write your prompts the way you would explain the task to a skilled colleague. "I need a competitive analysis of the top 5 project management tools. Focus on pricing, key differentiators, and enterprise features. Present it as a comparison table followed by a 3-paragraph executive summary. Our product is positioned for mid-market companies with 50 to 500 employees." That is a complete, effective prompt for Claude.

Claude handles nuance well. If your task involves subjective judgment, competing considerations, or "it depends" answers, Claude will engage with the nuance rather than defaulting to generic advice. This makes it particularly good for strategy, analysis, and any task where the right answer requires weighing tradeoffs.

Claude takes correction gracefully. When you say "that is not quite right, here is what I meant," Claude adjusts without defensiveness or over-correction. It also asks clarifying questions when a prompt is genuinely ambiguous, which is better than guessing and producing irrelevant output.

The single best tip for prompting Claude: treat it like a brilliant colleague who has broad knowledge but does not know the specifics of your situation. Provide the specific context, and let Claude bring the analytical skill.
