OpenAI Is Buying the Git Layer Under Codex and Built Its Own Git Backend. No Price, No Close Date, and No Product That Competes With GitHub Yet.

OpenAI agreed on November 4 to acquire Pierre Computer Company, whose Code Storage product is a Git layer and whose open-source Trees, Diffs, and Highlights libraries already run inside the Codex app. Two days earlier OpenAI described Pando, its in-house Git-compatible backend for its monorepo, with a nearly 80% cut in median push latency and nearly a petabyte of Git data served daily, by OpenAI's account. The price is undisclosed, the deal needs regulatory approval, no product has been announced, and the GitHub-challenger framing is Axios's, not OpenAI's. Reports that Lovable, Bolt, and Amp store code on Pierre are press. We read both OpenAI posts and the Axios report.

OpenAI said today, November 4, 2026, that it has agreed to acquire Pierre Computer Company. Pierre makes Code Storage, a Git layer, and maintains three open-source libraries, Trees, Diffs, and Highlights, two of which, Trees and Diffs, already run inside the Codex app. OpenAI says the open-source projects stay open and Code Storage customers can keep using it after the deal closes. The price is undisclosed. The deal is not closed and needs regulatory approval.

Two days earlier, on November 2, OpenAI published a post about Pando, the Git-compatible backend it built for its own monorepo: median push latency cut by nearly 80%, nearly a petabyte of Git data served a day, by OpenAI's numbers. Put the two posts together and Axios wrote the headline everyone will repeat: OpenAI is coming for GitHub. OpenAI's post does not mention GitHub. There is no product, no timeline, and no Pando availability. What there is, if the press customer list holds, is a storage vendor used by rival coding-agent companies that is about to be owned by OpenAI. We read both OpenAI posts and the Axios report. Here is what held up.

Nothing changes for a GitHub user today. No product, no date, no Pando outside OpenAI. The announcement is about plumbing OpenAI already uses and now wants to own.

The customer list is the interesting part, and it is press. If Lovable, Bolt, and Amp keep their code on Pierre, three competitors to Codex will have OpenAI as their storage vendor. OpenAI's continuity promise covers the service; it does not address the optics.

Pando's numbers are self-reported, and one reader disputes the details. A critical write-up argues that two client-side features OpenAI's post describes are not in upstream Git. We read that headline, not a rebuttal; check it before repeating either side.

What To Do

If you are a Code Storage customer, read the change-of-control and data clauses in your contract now, before the close date you have not been given.

If you are on GitHub, nothing changes, and the thing to watch is whether a Pando or Codex-hosted repository product appears, which would be the first fact in this story that competes with anything.

The frontier is elsewhere: GitHub's own agent, Copilot Fusion, scored within two points of the best on AA's coding board last week, which is the competition that exists today. Our model comparison has the current standings side by side.
