Claude Max 20x Is Now Ultra at the Same $200. The 20x Was Only Ever the Five-Hour Cap; Weekly Stays at 10x Pro.

On October 30 Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max at $100 and Max 20x to Ultra at $200, with no price change. Per the pricing page and the Ultra help article, Max is 5x Pro every five hours and every week; Ultra is 10x Pro weekly with no five-hour limit for verified accounts, where verification runs on account and payment history and phone verification does not count. API credits are $100 a month on Max and $200 on Ultra, and Fable is capped at 50% of weekly on both. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically. Anthropic's product lead says, through secondary reports, that the old 20x only ever applied to the five-hour window and weekly was always 10x Pro, which makes this a rename and not a raise. The October 22 SemiAnalysis A/B remains unconfirmed. We read the pricing page and the help article.

Anthropic renamed its two Max plans today, October 30, 2026. Max 5x is now Max, at $100 a month. Max 20x is now Ultra, at $200. Nobody's price changed, and existing Max 20x subscribers are moved to Ultra automatically. The pricing page and the Ultra help article define the two: Max is 5x Pro usage every five hours and every week; Ultra is 10x Pro weekly with no five-hour limit for verified accounts.

The number that disappears is the 20. Anthropic's product lead, in remarks we have only through secondary reports, says the old Max 20x was always 10x Pro on the weekly cap and that "20x" described the five-hour window alone. If that is right, Ultra does not add weekly room to a Max 20x seat; it removes the five-hour cap for verified accounts and changes the name. "Verified" is doing work: the help article says verification is based on account and payment history, and phone verification does not remove the temporary five-hour limit an unverified Ultra account still sees. We read the pricing page, the Ultra help article, and Anthropic's announcement post on X. Here is what held up.

Rename, not a raise. Weekly on Ultra is 10x Pro. If weekly on Max 20x was already 10x Pro, as the product lead says and the help article's framing supports, the $200 buys the same week it bought on Wednesday. What changes is the five-hour cap, and only once the account clears verification.

API credits are a separate pool. The $100 and $200 a month in credits are for the API. They are not Claude or Claude Code usage, and they do not raise the weekly limit.

Check your own session bar. The help article's practical test: open Settings, then Usage. If there is no "Current session" bar, the five-hour limit is gone and the account is verified.

The A/B Question, Still Open

On October 22, SemiAnalysis reported that two Max 20x accounts on the same day and model had different windows, one with a 19% larger five-hour allowance and a 20% smaller weekly budget, from a sample of two. We carried that as secondary then, and it is still secondary: Anthropic has not confirmed or denied a test, and today's rename does not address it. If the weekly cap was always 10x Pro, the question of why two seats measured different weekly budgets is unchanged by the new name. Do not blend the SemiAnalysis token counts into the Ultra terms as if Anthropic had published them.

Who Should Use It

Stay on Ultra if you were on Max 20x and your bottleneck was the five-hour window; once verified, that cap is gone and the weekly is what it was.

Skip the upgrade from Max if your bottleneck is the week; Ultra doubles the weekly over Max, from 5x to 10x Pro, and that is the whole difference for $100 more. Do not count the API credits as chat usage.

The frontier is elsewhere: OpenAI un-cut its own $200 tier the day before, with a help page that disagrees with its announcement; both labs now sell a $200 plan whose absolute limits are not printed. Our model comparison has the current standings side by side.
