Claude Code Retires Opus 4.8 Fast Mode on November 30. After That, Old Scripts Error Out; They Do Not Fall Back.
Claude Code 2.1.316 deprecates fast mode for Opus 4.8 as of October 30, 2026 and removes it on November 30. The changelog is explicit about what happens next: fast-mode requests on Opus 4.8 return an error and do not fall back to standard Opus 4.8. Anthropic's guidance is to migrate to Opus 5.5 to keep the speedup. Whether the same sunset applies to the API outside Claude Code is not stated. We read the changelog.

Claude Code's changelog entry for version 2.1.316 carries one line that will break somebody's automation on the last day of November. "Deprecated fast mode for Opus 4.8 as of October 30, 2026; it will be removed on November 30, 2026. After removal, fast mode requests on Opus 4.8 return an error and do not fall back to standard Opus 4.8. Migrate to Opus 5.5 to keep the speedup."
The sentence to underline is the third one. A deprecation that degrades gracefully turns a fast run into a slow run; this one turns a fast run into a failed run. Any script, hook, routine, or CI job that still pins Opus 4.8 with the fast flag will stop working on November 30, not slow down. We read the changelog. That is the whole primary source, and it is enough. Here is what held up.
The Dates and the Behavior
| Opus 4.8 fast mode in Claude Code | |
|---|---|
| Deprecated | October 30, 2026 (Claude Code 2.1.316) |
| Removed | November 30, 2026 |
| After removal | Fast-mode requests on Opus 4.8 return an error; no fallback to standard Opus 4.8 |
| Anthropic's guidance | Migrate to Opus 5.5 to keep the speedup |
| Scope stated | Claude Code changelog |
| API outside Claude Code | Not stated |
| Opus 5.5 fast-mode price | Not checked here |
Hard error, not a quiet downgrade. That is Anthropic's own description, and it is the right design for a feature you want people to migrate off, and the wrong surprise for a job that runs at 3 a.m.
The deprecation window is already open. October 30 to November 30 is the month you have. The removal is the cliff.
Do not extend this to the API on your own. The changelog line is about Claude Code. Whether the Anthropic API drops Opus 4.8 fast mode on the same day is a separate question the changelog does not answer, and we do not answer it either.

| After removal: error, no fallback to standard Opus 4.8 | Verified (changelog, quoted) |
| Migrate to Opus 5.5 to keep the speedup | Verified as Anthropic's guidance |
| Same sunset on the Anthropic API outside Claude Code | Unverified (not in the changelog) |

What To Do
Grep your configs for Opus 4.8 with fast mode before November 30: hooks, routines, CI, anything that pins the model string and the speed flag together.
Point speed-sensitive runs at Opus 5.5 if your organization allows the newer model, and test the change before the cliff, not after the first failed run.
The frontier is elsewhere: Opus 5.5 is the model Anthropic is steering you to, and it is the one on top of the current index at 58. Our model comparison has the current standings side by side.
